We had the distinct pleasure of working with Hyland on the design of our straw bale house. We had many requirements in regards to passive solar, insulation, fire-resistance and overall layout. Hyland masterfully balanced our needs and wants with code and reality while guiding us through the design process. He had an abundance of creative and elegant solutions, that greatly improved the outcome.
Realizing that we were not easy clients, we never felt that he was too busy, didn’t have patience to listen to yet another question or willingness to consider potential changes. We found Hyland to be a good communicator, with prompt and thorough responses to our many questions. I appreciated his use of electronic media for communication, document and idea sharing, and modeling walkthroughs.
Hyland was able to provide a 3D model, viewable with free software, that we could use to examine the complete house as the plans evolved. This really let us visualize the house, and was critical/essential/vital in making decisions, and ultimately getting just what we wanted.
